Five fearless Senior Girl Scouts from Troop 910 took on the Kennebec River rapids during their recent white water rafting trip up North!
“We’re always looking for new activities that we haven’t tried before, so when I found rafting as an option, I asked them if they wanted to try it,” says Troop 910 Leader Jana Richardson.
Using their cookie sales, the troop booked a guided tour with Magic Falls Adventures in West Forks, which happens to be owned by a Girl Scout parent! Before they knew it, they were off on the river, ferociously rowing through intense currents and waves, following the direction of a knowledgeable guide who kept things calm and fun the entire time while teaching the Girl Scouts fun facts about the river.
“They loved all of the rapids and wanted to do that part all over again. The screams and laughs were so fun to hear,” says Jana.
Although the rafting trip wasn’t necessarily directly connected to a badge or patch, Troop 910 has been working on the Mental Health Awareness, Becoming Me, and Resilient, Ready Strong programs—all of which they were able to tie into their trip on the river.
“We talked about how life can be difficult and uncomfortable sometimes, but in those situations, you have to push through to make progress and grow personally. Whether that be standing up for yourself, checking in on a friend, or trying something new like rafting,” says Jana.
And push through, they did. Each of the Seniors had an absolute blast despite the newness and fear surrounding the water activity. Plus, they worked on many skills while in the raft: teamwork, supportiveness, encouragement, risk-taking, and more!
“My biggest takeaway really is the pride I get when seeing these girls try something new, work together, conquer their fears, and learn how to take safe risks,” says Jana.
