Troop 548 from the Rockport area traveled to Troop 551’s hometown of Fairfield to spend an indoor overnight together this June!
After meeting Troop 548 Leader Chase Young at last year’s Camp Adventures for Grown-ups, Kait Burke, the leader of Troop 551, posed the idea of one day bringing the groups together for an activity.
Following an icebreaker introduction, the two troops got to work setting up camp for the night. They put up tents, organized an indoor kitchen, and played a few games to get comfortable.
“We paired up girls from each troop to ensure everyone was taking advantage of making new friends,” says Kait.
Using their camper knowledge, the Girl Scouts from Troop 551 showed their Rockport sisters how to build box ovens, which they used to cook delicious cinnamon rolls! In return, Troop 548 taught them all about the Fling Flyers Design Challenge badge.
“This was a real teaching opportunity for Troop 548 towards completing their current Take Action badge,” says Kait.
In no time, all the troop leaders observed Girl Scouts from both troops making connections over common interests and even swapping contact information to keep in touch after the overnight. Talk about being a sister to every Girl Scout!
“It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of earning badges when sometimes, girls just want to make new friends beyond their usual geography,” says Kait.
The two troops are already planning another overnight during winter break and hope to bring in a third troop from a different service unit thanks to another troop leader friend who met at Camp Adventures for Grown-ups.
