The Brunswick Downtown Association (BDA) recently organized their second annual “Have a Seat” campaign and this year, Troop 1407 had the opportunity to participate!
During the “Have a Seat” project, dozens of Adirondack chairs handcrafted by Maine State Prison inmates are decorated by various clubs, artists, and sponsors. This year, 31 chairs were purchased and personalized in an effort to “bring a spark of joy to Downtown Brunswick,” according to the BDA website.
Following the 2023 theme of “Summer in Maine,” the sunny chairs aim to brighten up the city and bring some extra smiles to passersby who wish to take a load off while enjoying their time in the area.
“This year, our troop was offered the opportunity to participate, we were sponsored by Portland Pie,” says Troop 1407 Leader Anna Nelson.
After an initial meeting, the Girl Scouts decided to dedicate their chair to images of their favorite things: music, the outdoors, Maine, puppy paws, and of course as a nod to both their organization and sponsor, cookies and pizza! For all their hard work and assistance, Portland Pie even provided the girls with free pizzas during their final painting session.
“This was an excellent exercise for the girls. They got to practice collaboration, taking turns, and executing a vison. Plus, the troop is always interested in opportunities to be creative and make the world a better place with their art,” says Anna.
For now, you can check out the troop’s chair on display in the front of Norway Savings Bank on Maine Street in Brunswick where it will stay until late September. At the end of the summer, the chairs will be auctioned off to support more BDA future programs.
