While most folks hunt for eggs in the spring, Troop 5002 scavenged for books at the Baxter Memorial Library last month! Ten Daisies and Brownies participated in the library activity, which included an exclusive tour from Library Assistant, Jeff, and a scavenger hunt which helped the girls learn about the different areas, services, and literature that the space has to offer.
“It was great to watch the girls work together to try to find the items on the scavenger hunt list and to problem solve. As a new troop, we are trying to find different ways to expand their circles. This was the perfect activity to do so,” said Troop Leader Kari Pofhal.
The whole scavenger hunt came to be after a few of the girls expressed interest in checking out books before their troop meetings, which are regularly held in a conference room within the library.
After completing the tour and checking off all found items on the scavenger list, the girls got to explore on their own and each received a Baxter Memorial Library bookmark. At the end of the visit, they learned that their library cards could be used to check out books at four other different libraries between South Portland, Cape Elizabeth, Westbrook, and Scarborough!
“The Baxter Memorial Library has a reciprocal borrowing agreement […] The girls were very excited that they could use their library card in all of the several locations,” said Kari.
One of Kari’s favorite moments from the afternoon was “seeing the girls talking about their favorite books they are currently reading; it is fun to see young readers excited about reading.”
Libraries are the perfect hosts for troop meetings, activities, and programs across a wide range of topics, so next time your Girl Scout troop is looking for a change of scenery—keep your local library in mind!
