Building Confidence and Courage Across Europe
Troop 5019 had the trip of a lifetime 3 years in the making! Three Girl Scouts from Maine teamed up with a fellow Girl Scout from Oklahoma, who they met through Girls on the Go, for an unforgettable 12 day European adventure across Paris, London, and Edinburgh.
Troop 5019 has built their travel confidence on local trips to Boston, New Hampshire, and Washington D.C., these Girl Scouts set their sights on a trip abroad and used their money management skills. The Girl Scouts have been planning and saving for this trip for 3 years and funded the trip by participating in the Fall Product and Girl Scout Cookie sales. They also sold over 350 extra cookie boxes by going door to door this year alone and also held bottle drives, craft sales, bake sales, and a dessert booth throughout the year.
The Girl Scouts had an incredible trip and some of their favorite memories include feeding hairy coos in Scotland, summiting the Eiffel Tower, catching theater performances in London, visiting Disneyland Paris, and making lifelong friends. During the trip the girls gained real world independence by navigating city metros, ordering meals in foreign languages, and embracing new cultures with ease.
“These girls are stronger and more capable than they each think of themselves,” said 5019 Troop Leader Shannon Johnson. “When a girl tells me she feels more confident in her ability to travel to different cultures and experience them, I feel like I did something right for them, that I’ve accomplished my mission as their leader to help them build courage and confidence.”
