After noticing an increase in roadside litter throughout their Kennebunk community, eleven Girl Scouts from Troop 268 decided to devote their Bronze Award project to coming up with a solution. With a passion for animal welfare, they also wanted to do something for local pets.
“The troop decided to address litter in our community. They also wanted to do something positive for animals,” says Troop 268 Leader Janna Cunningham.
With their plan in place, the Girl Scouts took action. After recruiting help from family members and friends, the group was able to organize a widespread roadside cleanup in the Kennebunk area near a highway. Once they had beautified the roads, the troop also made a kind donation of supplies and toys for a local animal shelter.
“The Kennebunk community was helped by our cleaning up. Now, tourists arriving will see a cleaner town,” says one of the Girl Scouts who worked on the project.
Community organizing, teamwork, problem solving, and learning how to address community needs are a few of several skills learned during their journey. Troop 268 hopes their cleanup efforts will inspire local residents to keep up maintenance of roadside litter for years to come.
