Reading is a vital part of youth development, and access to reading material is a crucial first step. Troop 1049 put that sentiment to work throughout their community by filling outdoor lending libraries around Biddeford for their Bronze Award project!
The troop began their mission last March and finished their project in February of this year.
“The goal of the project was to get more literature out to children in our community,” says Troop 1049 Leader Coleen Whitehurst-Hatt.
Using their cookie funds, Girl Scouts from the troop also purchased their very own lending library and regularly filled it to ensure that anyone who wishes to borrow or trade a book can do so easily.
“The troop also reached out to the school and helped support the annual book bizarre that allows students to pick out a book for a friend, sibling, or themselves,” says Coleen.
Troop 1049 is already seeing their hard work transform into a community impact as they’ve noticed more and more books being taken from the lending libraries they have filled!
“We are so proud of the impact we have made in our community and have seen more little libraries popping up everywhere! Even at the Dunkin’ Donuts inside our Walmart in Biddeford,” says Coleen.
