Artistic expression is an important ingredient when it comes to Troop 5043’s skill-building activities. That’s why when four Juniors, Ellie, Cassie, Evelyn, and Bella, decided to work on completing their Bronze Award—art was a no-brainer focus.
In order to tie their passion for creativity to a sustainable solution, the team first had to consider some possible obstacles faced by their community surrounding the subject. When they realized that access to art supplies was not always affordable or easy for everyone, they knew just how to step in.
Since their local elementary school already had an after-school care program in place, they decided to work in collaboration to create a two-day summer arts program. Each Junior led a unique activity like air-dry clay, fairy gardens, stencil drawing, and floral painting,
“We learned to listen to kids and understand what they want. We also learned how to listen to our bronze award besties,” say the Juniors.
Thanks to the fact that their troop leader, Jamie Ribisi-Braley, is an artist herself, the group had lots of inspiration and support in their back pocket.
“I loved mentoring them through this project and seeing how well they work together […] Their artistic imagination feeds into their creative problem solving and this is an invaluable skill to have in life,” says Jamie.
