Multi-level Troop 551 has been preparing for their very first camporee since May, completing the necessary progression chart steps to attend an overnight at the 2023 Camp Kirkwold Camporee.
“The troop took walkabouts to observe both nature and trash left out to be more aware of the Leave No Trace principles,” says Troop 551 Leader Kait Burke.
In addition to their environmental preparation, the troop made practice packs for all different kinds of weather and lengths of overnight campouts.
“They set up wash stations, put up tents, made mini first-aid kits, and edible campfires at our practice overnight,” says Kait.
Thanks to the generosity from those around them, Troop 551 collected nearly all their camping gear from donations made by family and members of their community. With enough practice, organization, and anticipation under their belts, Troop 551 embarked on their first camporee experience—which was a smashing success.
The troop made sure to step up and not shy away from their responsibilities that they practiced all summer for, and their leader couldn’t have been prouder.
“All of the Girl Scouts had a blast at camporee and made new friends with the Girl Scouts we shared a campsite with. They can’t wait to camp again, which is the most heartwarming part seeing as many of these girls had never slept outside before,” says Kait.
