Daisy Troop 1609 recently gave back to their Vassalboro community by volunteering to sort donated food for the national “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive, the nation’s largest all-volunteer one-day food collection effort.
The troop first came up with the idea to put their efforts into addressing food scarcity after volunteering with the Vassalboro Food Station Pantry last November.
“Our troop made Thanksgiving pies for our local pantry and the director invited us to come visit sometime. When it was time to earn our Make the World a Better Place petal, we reached out and asked to schedule a time to visit,” says Troop 1609 Leader Julia Sidelinger.
The timing for their community service inquiry worked out perfectly as it aligned with the “Stamp Out Hunger” food drive run by the US Postal Service which had brought in hundreds of pounds of food to the Vassalboro pantry just a week prior.
“Our girls organized donations from that food drive, which will serve over 40 families in our community,” says Julia.
Nine Daisies from Troop 1609 showed up to the pantry ready to work, sorting through a whopping 488 pounds of donated non-perishable food that will be distributed to those in need!
“This was our first community service project as a troop and it was incredible to witness the dedication and hard work of our girls,” says Julia.
