Sticky, slimy, messy, and grimy are a few words to describe the latest exciting Girl Scout STEM event. Thirty-six Girl Scouts from the Somerset Service Unit attended the Ooey Gooey Science program at the Tewksbury Hall Federated Church in Skowhegan in mid-March.
Through a series of entertainment stations set up around the church, the girls got to make ice cream, elephant toothpaste, rainbow jars, moon dough, and glue-based slime—all while learning about chemical reactions!
“The girls loved all the stations, but slime may have been the favorite. I’m not sure if this was because they enjoyed working with the older girls running the station or because slime is too messy to make in their own homes!” Said Troop Leader Victoria Noyes from Troop 1375.
With such a great turnout from attendees who ranged in age from Daisies to Juniors, Victoria says the program would not have been possible without the help of 12 adult volunteers and older Girl Scouts who helped organize and guide participants through the science experiments.
“My girls helped to run the slime station, it brings me such joy to see the great young women they have become and watch their eagerness to help out with events, grow […] our community is raising wonderful, confident, women leaders that the younger Girl Scouts can look up to,” said Victoria.
Not only was Ooey Gooey Science an interactive way for Girl Scouts to get hands on with fun experiments—the activities also offered Brownies the opportunity to work towards completing their Home Scientist badges.
