Now that cookie season has come to an end, troops all across Maine are putting their hard-earned funds towards exciting goals and sustainable community projects. For Troop 1281 from Kittery, that goal happened to be supporting local wildlife rehabilitation!
“The girls made lists of ways to help our community and together we narrowed it down to three choices. The girls voted and the Center for Wildlife unanimously won,” says Troop Leader Jylle Nevejans.
Together, the troop was able to raise and donate $500 that will go towards rehabilitating injured animals at the Center for Wildlife located in Cape Neddick.
“The center also has a wish list on Amazon for items needed for the animals and the girls were able to purchase a new air pump and turf needed urgently,” says Jylle.
As a thank you in response to their kind donation, the Center for Wildlife invited Troop 1281 to visit the organization for a private tour on May 10th! The Girl Scouts got to see owls, ravens, porcupines, hawks, and even got to interact with a snake and turtle up close and personal! In addition to the animal experience, the troop also got to visit the organization’s various educational centers filled with props, scientific materials, and even costumes.
“The troop loved meeting Poppy the porcupine! Many of the girls had never seen one in person and Poppy enjoyed the attention. They also really enjoyed the dress-up station where they could use masks and tails and be silly together,” Jylle.
The troop left the day with a new appreciation for wildlife and were inspired by those who work so hard in Maine to help injured animals.
