‘Tis the season for fall snacking and what better way to get in the autumn spirit than with festive charcuterie boards!
Daisies and Brownies from Troop 1487 came together at the Old Town Library this October to work on completing their Snack badge. With special help from the pros over at Downtown Charcuterie, a personalized snack catering service in Bangor offering lessons in how to make the perfect charcuterie board, the Girl Scouts became experts in no time.
“The girls had voiced wanting to earn their Snack badge, and I had been to Downtown Charcuterie before, so I spoke with them and they shared they would love to work with us,” says Troop Leader Lauren Dicker.
Starting with something autumnal, the troop first learned how to make cream cheese pumpkins by rolling the cheese into a ball and using a bit of cow tail for the stem.
But it wasn’t all snacks and edible Play-Doh—the girls also got a lesson in food-prep, learning all about knife safety, cutting boards, and the proper way to cut cheese, fruit, and vegetables! Perhaps one of Troop 1487’s favorite parts from the day was being taught how to make pepperoni roses by layering and folding slices of the cured meat until it resembled a beautiful flower.
“We all learned the power of creativity, how everyone can be given the same ingredients and each make something completely different and beautiful,” says Lauren.
In the end, their hard work paid off as everyone earned the Snack badge (and a full and happy stomach too)!
