Beach season is upon us, meaning folks from across the state are making their way to the ocean to cool off, tan up, and lay out at the first sight of sunshine. Unfortunately, the uptick in beach traffic means an increase of trash being found on Maine’s most popular beaches, taking away from the natural beauty, and endangering local species.
That’s where Troop 280 comes in.
On a sunny Thursday afternoon, nine Girl Scouts from Troop 280 spent the day cleaning up waste and restoring the charm at Bayview Beach in Saco.
“We spent an hour just walking the beach for trash and the girls were even able to dig up a mangled lobster trap and remove it from the beach,” says Troop 280 Leader Nichole Brunette.
Not only did the girls put in the work oceanside, but they also created a hand-painted mural dedicated to saving the beach that now hangs at Run of the Mill Public House and Brewery in Saco.
“The mural will remind visitors to take care of Maine’s beaches this summer,” says Nichole.
Great work, Troop 280! Your hardworking efforts remind us all to slow down, respect the world around us, and take care of our many lovely beaches here in Maine.
