Five Daisies and Juniors from Troop 1478 took to a different kind of petal achievement this past May as they embarked on a field trip to Augusta Florist to learn about making floral arrangements from the experts!
“We arranged the outing in coordination with our Juniors earning their Flowers Badge, which we had planned to work on in May. Our girls indicated interest in the topic on our beginning-of-year interest survey and it’s a great springtime badge,” says Troop Leader Carly Osier.
Carly says she decided to explore local florist shops when she noticed that several of the badge requirements called for engaging firsthand activities such as making bouquets and learning about the science behind flowers.
“One of the priorities within our troop is to get the girls out to participate in hands-on activities in the community by utilizing small, local businesses, particularly ones run by women,” says Carly.
That’s what led her to Jaclyn Jackowski and Nickole King, two floral designers from Augusta Florist who happily agreed to lead the troop in a fun and educational workshop.
“We learned about the different tools florists use, where the flowers might come from depending on the season, flower anatomy, and all about different types of flowers […] we also learned the basic rules of floral design like how to trim and clean different stems and how to balance a design visually,” says Carly.
In no time, the Daisies and Juniors became pros as they cleaned, trimmed, and arranged flowers of their choosing with pride while gaining a new appreciation for the skill. Carly says that this workshop is the perfect activity for any troop looking to work on the badge or simply to try something new within their community.
“This really reinforced my belief in the importance of getting the girls out do hands-on activities while interacting with local businesses in the community,” says Carly.
