Multi-level Troop 1336 from Jefferson recently learned their fair share of the jewelry business from a local expert. Owner and head designer at Peapod Jewelry, Joe Lugosch, paid the midcoastal troop of 15 a visit in late November.
“Joe took over the business from his mother a few years ago. His mother started Peapod in a small space in their garage almost 30 years ago,” says Troop 1336 Leader Alexandra Johnston.
Although his shop is located in Edgecomb, (and more recently at the Maine Mall!) Joe offered to bring his skills and knowledge to the troop during their usual meeting at the Jefferson Village School.
“Our Juniors were working on a Jeweler badge and our Brownies and Daisies were working on their Craft and Tinker badges, so it was a pretty open forum,” says Alexandra.
The Girl Scouts were able to ask any and all questions from jewelry design, to gemstones, to owning a small business, and more.
“Joe brought a selection of stones and made pendants with each of the girls to put on necklaces which was of course their favorite part,” says Alexandra.
According to Alexandra, while the biggest takeaway for the troop members was learning more about jewelry and getting hands-on experience—what struck her was a realization of just how much fascinating material there is for troop activities right in our own hometowns.
“We need to bring in more from our community because these girls really are eager to learn about different people and things that they do,” says Alexandra.
