April is Volunteer Appreciation Month for Girl Scouts of Maine and service units are celebrating accordingly! This special month is a time to appreciate our volunteers for all they do and reflect on their countless contributions to service units and troops all around Maine.
While some service units host ceremonies, dinners, and other fun activities to recognize volunteers, Saco Bay decided to put a fun artistic twist on their celebration.
“Volunteers are so important and vital to GSME because without volunteers, our Girl Scouts would not have as many opportunities to develop skills that will serve them for the rest of their lives,” says Troop 1212 Leader Kelley-Ann Morgan.
With help from other service unit and troop leaders, Saco Bay organized a wax candle-painting activity at St. David’s Episcopal Church in Kennebunk this March.
“We had eight leaders, eight Girl Scouts, and one volunteer support specialist attend this event,” says Kelley-Ann.
While younger Girl Scouts used acrylic paint to decorate their candles, older Girl Scouts and volunteers used colorful melted wax to express their creativity in a unique way! Although it was a bit of a learning curve to get a hang of the wax at first, everyone had a blast trying something new while reminiscing on appreciative volunteer stories.
Reflecting on her own personal connection to Girl Scout volunteers over the course of her life, Kelley-Ann says she wouldn’t be the same without their support.
“Thinking back on my own time as a Girl Scout, I would not be the person I am today without the time and effort that my troop volunteers put into my Girl Scout experience,” says Kelly-Ann.
