The recent solar eclipse had everyone in an astronomical
mood this April, including Troop 878 of Corinth!
The
group of Cadettes got together a few days before the eclipse to get
excited and, most importantly, prepare for safe viewing with some fun,
hands-on activities. Following along with a 2024 solar eclipse guide
written by William S. Shem, the Girl Scouts discussed viewing plans
and the unique lunar phenomena.
“We talked about the
difference between a solar eclipse and lunar eclipse, and they all got
to try astronaut food in the form of freeze-dried Caramel deLites®,”
says Troop Leader Amy Tatlock.
Afterward, the troop
flexed their creative muscles by painting colorful moon lamps! While
only a few Cadettes witnessed the eclipse together, Amy is grateful
they each got to connect beforehand to create, play, and learn about
this rare event!
“I liked how it went dark, and the birds
went silent, thinking it was bedtime,” says Girl Scout Abby.
“They have also decided to collect used solar eclipse glasses
from their community that are in good condition and send them to Latin
America so that in October 2024, when they get their eclipse, children
can enjoy safely,” says Amy.
