Six Girl Scouts from Troop 823 learned about lobstering from commercial fisherman, Linda Greenlaw, and her first mate Donna this July! The group booked the educational tour through Seashed Gifts who helped them secure the opportunity to take a ride on a lobster boat in Surry.
In addition to her lifelong dedication to fishing, Linda is a New York Times best-selling author of eleven books! She’s also been featured in several movies and television shows such as Deadliest Catch and Discovery Channel’s Swords: Life on the Line.
Through hands-on learning activities, Linda and Donna taught the group about the meaning of different buoy colors to mark traps, how to determine whether the lobsters are banded, how to store them in a circulating seawater tank, baiting traps, safely picking up crabs, and so much more!
The water-friendly outing was part of the troop’s efforts to complete the Maine Lobster Patch Program, which encourages Daisies through Ambassadors to learn more about the famed crustaceans and their impact on the state.
“My biggest takeaway from the experience was that lobstering is a lot of hard work and you never know what you’ll pull up in a trap,” says Troop 823 Leader Michelle Perry.
