In their latest adventure, Girls on the Go ventured from Maine all the way to Peru this July, immersing themselves in the rich culture and breathtaking landscapes of the Andes for an amazing eleven-day journey.
“This trip was incredible in every way possible! We learned so much about the rich history, geography, and culture of the Inka, indigenous, and Spanish people of Peru,” says Girls on the Go Troop Leader Shannon Johnson.
With traditional Peruvian arts and crafts on their bucket list of activities to try, the intrepid travelers tried their hand at weaving, pottery, and even making jewelry! From an educational side of things, they learned about local topics like diverse geography, archeological sites, native animal species, weather, history, altitude and more.
According to Shannon, there were so many highlights of the trip it was nearly impossible to choose a favorite. In no particular order: hiking around Machu Picchu, playing football with students, trying new traditional foods, learning about a nonprofit children’s education center, and fishing for piranha on the Amazon River were all memorable moments from the excursion.
“We thoroughly enjoyed our interactions with the environment, the people, and the culture,” says Shannon.
While this may not have been the first big trip for each of the Girl Scouts in attendance, everyone who went Peru could easily agree that this was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that they whole-heartedly recommend to anyone interested in expanding their horizons!
“Travel is such an eye-opening experience. Your small world expands as you interact with and learn about other places and people. Our travelers have an eye to a future when they will return to Peru to lend a hand,” says Shannon.
