When Troop 1447 decided to pursue the Girl Scout Snack badge, they had to think a little bit outside of the box to secure kitchen space.
“We tapped into some of our resources at the Lake Region High School Vocational Center and convinced Chef Eric to host our troop,” says Troop 1447 Leader Kate Riggs.
Chef Eric is the Culinary Arts Instructor at Lake Region and offered to lead the Girl Scouts in a night of kitchen safety and fun baking in January. After handing out chef hats and aprons to each of the Girl Scouts, Chef Eric started going over some basic dos and don’ts in the kitchen such as asking for parent permission and never using a stove without supervision and help.
“The girls got to make sugar cookies from scratch, they did all the measurements, and each had a recipe to read. Each girl also got to pick from a huge variety of mix-in items such as chocolate chips, coconut, peanut butter, and other candies,” says Kate.
Coincidentally, Chef Eric also brought a few high school assistants to help out with the lesson, two of which are current Girl Scouts themselves!
