BRUNSWICK—Girl Scouts of Maine’s Mollockett Service Unit hosted Girl Scout Brownies, Juniors, and Cadettes in 2nd-8th grades on Saturday at the University of Maine Augusta, Brunswick Executive Airport location, alongside workshop presenters and speakers from the University of Maine, the Academy of Model Aeronautics, and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
This hands-on, full-day event designed to educate Girl Scouts about the aviation profession gave participants a unique look at the world of aviation through engaging activities and expert presentations. Girl Scouts learned about the stages of flight—preflight taxi, takeoff, aeronautics, and landing—and built mini sparrow gliders and FPG-9 models to study and fly. Girl Scouts had the opportunity to experience air traffic control through simulations, explore the cockpit of an aircraft, learn about and fly drones, and earn an Aviation badge for their participation. While testing her mini sparrow glider in the airport hangar a Brownie from a troop in Rome, Maine exclaimed, “This is the best thing I have ever done, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!”
This special STEM learning and career exploration event was developed to “broaden a Girl Scout’s knowledge of the aviation industry, to expand their future career possibilities, and to provide them with a day of fun in STEM”, according to event organizer Gail Castonguay. “The people who worked on this project are very passionate about their work and I believe that came across to the Girl Scouts during their presentations”, Castonguay added.
The Aviation Day event is just one example of the many STEM-focused programs and activities Girl Scouts offers girls ages 6-18. “We are committed to offering Girl Scouts dynamic learning experiences, rooted in one of our four key pillars-STEM. Programs like this and our upcoming Build. Create. Innovate. community event, help open doors to non-traditional career paths and inspire girls to nurture their dreams," says Girl Scouts of Maine’s CEO, Mara Robinov-Moorhead.
Girl Scouts of Maine will host Build. Create. Innovate., a free event open to the public, on October 19th in Bangor. This family event, fun for all ages, will be a day to discover the world of technology and engineering with hands-on activities that explore how innovation shapes our lives—on land, in the air, in space, on water, and in the digital world. Through programs across the state of Maine and beyond, Girl Scouts of all backgrounds and abilities can be unapologetically themselves as they discover their strengths and rise to meet new challenges—whether they want to climb to the top of a tree or the top of their class, lace up their boots for a hike or advocate for climate justice, or make their first best friends. Backed by trusted adult volunteers, mentors, and millions of alums, Girl Scouts lead the way as they find their voices and make changes that affect the issues most important to them.
