BANGOR—Elizabeth Smith of Bangor has been awarded a $5,000 college scholarship from the Girl Scouts of the USA for her Gold Award project. Gold Award Girl Scouts become innovative problem-solvers, empathetic leaders, confident public speakers, and focused project managers. They learn resourcefulness, tenacity, and decision-making skills, giving them an edge personally and professionally.
Smith, who received the Pinnacle Award and Future Leaders Scholarship from Girl Scouts of Maine in May, plans to attend Simmons University to study nursing in the fall. This award is a massive accomplishment and testament to Smith’s dedication to community impact.
Smith was inspired to create her Gold Award project around promoting equity by providing students with access to clean, well-fitting, and professional attire. She witnessed the challenges her peers faced in finding affordable prom outfits, securing jobs due to lack of appropriate attire, and the negative impacts this can have on a student’s mental health.
Elizabeth created a closet at Bangor High School that provides formal and professional attire to students. The closet will be maintained by incoming members of the Bangor High School Service Club and supported by the guidance counselors at the school.
“I am so excited to be awarded this,” said Smith. “This will have a significant impact on my ability to afford college. Girl Scouts has meant so much to me over the years, it is an honor to accept this scholarship!”
