Girl Scouts of Maine Kicks off Community Service Weekend with Open House
Featuring Interactive Community Workshops
SOUTH PORTLAND – Girl Scouts of Maine (GSME) will hold a free, open house event on September 30, unveiling their reimagined space within the South Portland Service Center and hosting a variety of interactive activities for members and the general public, launching their Weekend of Service.
Open to all, visitors of the South Portland Open House are invited to explore the refreshed service center by immersing themselves in exciting hands-on workshops featuring new Girl Scout programming including Maker badge activities and building mental wellness skills through breathing techniques and more from Girl Scout’s expanded Mental Wellness patch program.
Although Girl Scouts and volunteers are encouraged to participate in the weekend of service wherever they wish, the open house will offer a variety of opportunities aimed at addressing local issues as well, including making snuffle mats for the Animal Refuge League and bringing food to donate to a local pantry.
Attendees will have the opportunity to share their Girl Scout experiences while testing out storytelling equipment found in the new Media Studio, meet our CEO, and get their face painted by a pro—this event has something on the agenda for everyone.
“We are thrilled to finally reveal the latest version of the South Portland Service Center and offer the public an opportunity to explore workshops inspired by our latest program innovations. Our new space offers the vibrancy and resources necessary to inspire Girl Scouts to take action and spark change, and we are looking forward to sharing that with everyone in conjunction with the Weekend of Service,” says GSME CEO Mara Robinov-Moorhead.
GSME’s Weekend of Service will run from September 30 to October 1, during which Girl Scouts from around the state are encouraged to venture into their communities to take part in a volunteer activity that benefits their local area. Past participants of the annual weekend celebration have given back through gardening, organizing food drives, cleaning up trash, collecting clothing donations, and countless other ways to help improve their towns and cities.
Where: South Portland Service Center, 138 Gannett Drive, South Portland, ME 04106.
When: September 30, 2023, from 1:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.

We Are Girl Scouts of Maine
Girl Scouts bring their dreams to life and work together to build a better world. Through programs across the state of Maine and beyond, Girl Scouts of all backgrounds and abilities can be unapologetically themselves as they discover their strengths and rise to meet new challenges—whether they want to climb to the top of a tree or the top of their class, lace up their boots for a hike or advocate for climate justice, or make their first best friends. Backed by trusted adult volunteers, mentors, and millions of alums, Girl Scouts lead the way as they find their voices and make changes that affect the issues most important to them.
