Troop 902 had breakfast reservations with a few very unexpected guests early this spring at the Roger Williams Zoo in Providence, Rhode Island: otters!
“Since the ‘Breakfast with the Otters’ program began at 8:00 a.m., we chose to travel down to Rhode Island the day before and stay the night in a hotel. It gave the girls a chance to spend time together and hang out,” says Troop Leader Julie Hasbrouck.
The zoo’s program offers a hot buffet breakfast followed by a guided behind-the-scenes trip to the otter enclosure where guests can learn about the furry creatures firsthand from staff members!
In preparation for the exciting trip to see their favorite animals, the troop even designed matching custom sweatshirts using a Cricut borrowed from their local library. After a fun hotel pizza party and a good night’s rest, the five Girl Scouts made their way to the Roger Williams Zoo to eat breakfast while learning about otters!
“The girls really enjoyed seeing the habitat from the other side of the glass and they loved celebrating Romo’s birthday. They even got to see the otters come out and receive their icy fish treats,” says Hasbrouck.
After their otter interaction, the troop explored the rest of the zoo where they got to see a family of tamarin monkeys including a three-day-old baby! While the close encounter with animals at the zoo was an incredible chance to learn about semiaquatic mammals, the trip also offered the troop an invaluable lesson in goal setting and how to plan an excursion.
“It was a great bonding, learning, and downright fun experience. It was awesome to see the girls set a goal for what they wanted to do, plan the trip, research the otters, and budget for all the moving parts,” says Hasbrouck.
