Six Girl Scouts from multi-level Troop 823 recently visited the Challenger Learning Center of Maine in Bangor to learn about space!
“The girls got to experience experiments that would be performed on the groups ahead of a space flight and in orbit on the international space station,” says Troop Leader Michelle Perry.
From planning nutritious meals out of dried food, to simulating what it’s like to find a lunar landing site free of craters, using robotic arms to move objects and more—the Girl Scouts got the full astronaut experience. Despite the many fun activities that the troop got to participate in throughout the day, the blast-off simulation was a unanimous favorite.
“I think the biggest takeaway for the girls was learning that space missions are complex and require the coordination and cooperation of a lot of people here on Earth,” says Michelle.
Coincidentally, one of the staff members who hosted the troop at the learning center, happened to be a lifelong Girl Scout herself!
“I highly recommend this as a beneficial field trip for other troops. It’s a fast-paced, multi-stationed experience with lots of hands-on activities,” says Michelle.
