Girl Scouts are finding tons of fun and different ways to enjoy the outdoors despite the chilly temperatures and snow. Eight Girl Scouts from Troop 1478 decided to changeup their scenery this February with a visit to Viles Arboretum, a free botanical garden in Augusta.
Not only did the troop get a healthy dose of fresh air and pretty views, but they also took the field trip as an opportunity to learn more about tracking Maine wildlife! Through Viles Arborteum’s gear share program, each member of the troop got to use a pair of free snowshoes to venture throughout the area and discover the kinds of animals that frequent the location.
“We looked for and identified animal tracks, tree markings, and other signs of animal presence. We also discussed how to tell the difference between similar looking animal tracks such as wolves, dogs, and coyotes,” says Troop 1478 Leader Carly Osier.
The troop also got to learn about the history of the 224-acre arboretum, which has been in use since the early 1800s, first as farmland, and then space for occupational therapy for patients at a nearby hospital. Today, the botanical garden offers an easily accessible outdoor space for Mainers to explore nature and learn about the state’s agricultural history.
“My biggest takeaway was what an important community resource the arboretum actually is. They offer a lot of different resources and programs for the community that I never even knew about like free snowshoe and cross-country ski rentals, a community garden, apple trees, guided tours, hiking trails, free sensory activities, and more,” says Carly.
