Three Brownies from Troop 1344 attended UMaine’s National Girls and Women in Sports Day on February 10, an annual event recognizing the many diverse athletic programs and opportunities that female athletes have today.
“The event also serves to commemorate the enactment of Title IX, ensuring equal opportunities for female athletes at colleges and universities,” says Troop 1344 Leader Elyse Bronson.
With around 200 attendees at the open-to-the-public event, the day was filled with fun hands-on activities and lots of people to meet. The event began with a sports fair consisting of stations run by student athletes allowing attendees to try different sports such as track and field, basketball, football, hockey, soccer, field hockey, dance, and Troop 1344’s favorite, ultimate frisbee.
“Ultimate frisbee was the group favorite. The women from the ultimate frisbee team even asked if we’d like them to visit one of our meetings to teach the rest of the group how to play—which was met with a resounding yes,” says Elyse.
Since the event was free for children ages 12 and under and just $6 for adult tickets, Elyse highly recommends this annual celebration of sports to any troop interested in a fun day of learning, exercise, and building confidence.
After a day jam-packed with sports, games, and tons of guest appearances from student athletes, coaches, and sports officials, the Girl Scouts got to watch a sold-out UMaine basketball game as they took on the UNH Wildcats for an exciting win!
“This was such a positive and empowering event for our girls. Even at their age, they feel the pressure of society to be a certain way, and to see them light up with pride and confidence was priceless!” Says Elyse.
