Girl Scouts and helping others go together like peanut butter and jelly—sometimes literally!
Multi-level Troop 1336 from Jefferson recently participated in a food drive organized by Bangor Savings Bank, only this one had a twist on America’s favorite sweet and salty combo: peanut butter and jelly.
“Join us this month as we unite to combat food insecurity! By donating jars of peanut butter and jelly, you can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those facing hunger in our community,” said Bangor Savings in a Facebook post.
What’s even better, for every donated jar of peanut butter or jelly, Bangor Savings has pledged to match the contribution with another! Troop 1336 Leader Lindsey Jones said that her troop decided to partner with a Bangor Savings branch in Damariscotta since one of their volunteers is a manager there.
“The girls had talked about different ways to help the community, so they decided on an amount of $100 they would like to spend, then the adults did the shopping,” says Lindsey.
In the end, the 15 Girl Scouts from the troop opted to buy more peanut butter than jelly since it has more protein and nutrition than jelly, making it a more filling ingredient for those battling food insecurity. The food drive ran from September 1 though September 30.
Although the Bangor Saving’s peanut butter and jelly drive is over, be sure to check out their local branch websites (https://www.bangor.com/locations) and social media pages to stay up to date on their many other events and campaigns focused on tackling hunger in Maine.
