Whittle by whittle, Girl Scouts are learning new skills and making memories along the way! Seven Girl Scouts from Bangor Troop 1381 recently completed their GSME Pocket Knife Safety certification and made some pretty cool creations!
To practice safe usage, the group participated in a soap whittling activity where they learned to carve hearts together under troop leader supervision.
“They had a blast and loved honing their knife skills! They found it difficult at first, but once they got the hang of it, they wanted to whittle more things,” says Troop 1381 Leader Victoria Kasper.
Initially a bit nervous to handle the tool, the Girl Scouts quickly became fascinated with the ability to use the knives as artistic mediums, creating intricate designs in something as ordinary as a bar of soap!
After mastering the art of soap, the group became comfortable enough to put their knife skills to the test on food, preparing an array of bite-sized snacks, cut safely by hand without assistance to enjoy together.
“My biggest goal from the training was to have the girls learn to see knives as a tool and not something to be scared of,” says Victoria.
