AUGUSTA—Girl Scout Troop 612 put their minds and bodies to the test last month at the GSME “Namaste-Sleep-a-way” overnight program in Augusta. Downtown Yoga & Healing Arts hosted the girls for a series of activities aimed at building confidence, strength, and mindfulness.
“The girls tested their strength and courage during aerial stunts and developed skills to help calm anxiety through meditation and traditional yoga postures.” Said Danielle Salhany, leader of troop 612.
Beginning with a two-hour aerial class, the girls took their energy to the yoga mats for mindful breathing exercises before settling down for a relaxing sleepover by the fire. The program was led by Andrea Shorey, owner and director of Downtown Yoga & Healing Arts.
“Andrea was a great rol model for the girls.” Said Danielle.
The life skills yoga retreat was one of several programs organized by GSME that caters to the Resilient, Ready, Strong Patch Program and the Science of Happiness Cadette Badge. The patch program draws on ten unique skills that build resilience and promote inner strength. Through various engaging activities, girls are encouraged to hone in on a wide range of mental expertise everywhere from understanding their emotions, to practicing gratitude, experiencing nature, taking action, and so much more.
As the name suggests, the Science of Happiness Badge is all about experimenting with different methods to increase self-happiness and express gratitude. Troop 612 got the perfect opportunity to give it a try at “Namaste-Sleep-a-way,” within the guided meditation activity.
