After seeing kids excessively use technology, Emily focused her Silver Award project on how screens have contributed to a decline in reading. She noticed a decline in children's enthusiasm for reading, a passion she had as a child, and wanted to encourage young kids to read more and reduce screen time. Her project has three main parts: An Interactive Sensory Path, a Little Free Library, and a literacy Garden: Sust. She worked with daycares and local food pantries to ensure the project’s sustainability and engaged the community through social media. At least 25 families have benefited from the resource Emily created, and it has had lasting impacts on promoting literacy, outdoor learning, and reducing screen time in my community.
