Formerly combined Troops 1075 and 1775 earned the Bronze Award after deciding to focus their project on public park cleanliness!
The idea came about after the troops participated in a cleanup of Butternut Park in Chelsea. The park is a local gem known for pretty views of the Kennebec River and a safe spot for dog walkers. With lots of dogs however, comes lots of dog waste—and unfortunately not all pet owners clean up after their animals.
The Girl Scouts took particular note of the messy area and wanted to take action as part of their Bronze Award project. That’s when they came up with the “Doggy Doo Dispenser,” a vertical station with a trash basket, a sign, and free bags for dog owners to safely and hygienically dispose of dog waste!
“The project made a couple of different impacts. It creates a cleaner environment for families, a dog-friendly environment, and it makes residents of the town of Chelsea more aware of the park,” says Troop 1775 Leader Heather Pratt.
By identifying a community issue, coming up with a solution, and taking action in an original and unique way, the group of Girl Scouts had the opportunity to strengthen several skills such as teamwork, problem-solving, public speaking, community organizing, and so much more.
