Six Girl Scouts from Troop 896 from Apple Mountain Service Unit recently completed their Bronze Award project.
As a part of their journey, the Girl Scouts cleaned up a trail on Williams Mountain in Jackman. Their act of service was especially appreciated by one of the troop’s leaders who has a camp on the mountain. She offered the troop free use of her campsite in return for clearing the trail of trash and debris!
For their actual Bronze Award project, Troop 896 knew they wanted to focus on animal welfare. In the past, their troop had donated supplies and food to a local pantry, so it was a no-brainer to further that effort with a similar community project. The Girl Scouts organized and built their very own pet pantry in the hopes that local families struggling financially, would be able to maintain care for their animals through free toys, food, and other necessary pet supplies such as treats and leashes that can often be quite expensive.
“Thanks to our project, humans and pets will be able to stay together,” says Troop Leader Tina Badalucco.
Over the course of completing their Bronze Award project, Tina says the troop learned about uncovering needs within their community, and how to organize a sustainable solution to help.
“We learned about how to search within our community for problems that we can solve, and we also learned about woodworking safety while building our pantry. We also learned how to find materials, ask for donations, and how to spread the word about our project for others to take advantage of it,” says Tina.
