Seven Girl Scouts from the Knox Service Unit were inspired to dedicate their Bronze Award project to children after noticing a lack of safe shared spaces for families with young ones in their community to play with toys.
Given their proximity to Rockland, the Girl Scouts thought that giving their project a beach twist would make the most sense for day trip visitors who perhaps forgot to bring toys for their children.
“We wanted to create a place for children and families in the community to be able to exchange beach and sand toys to enhance their enjoyment of South Beach,” says Troop 548 Leader Lynda Young.
And that’s just what they did. The group constructed a stand-up community box filled with toys for beachgoers to borrow, exchange, and add to! Through their project, the Girl Scouts learned about community needs, teamwork, and how to isolate and create a solution for local issues.
Before completing their Bronze Award project, the Girl Scouts also embarked on a journey project for which they created a Brain Break on YouTube! Their designed, edited and finished product went live to share their love of taking short movement breaks while using their brains. You can check out the full video here.
