Fireworks, food, music, and games were on the docket at this year’s Standish Spectacular, an annual town celebration and fundraiser for the Standish community to come together and celebrate in true summer fashion.
This year, five Girl Scouts and three adult volunteers from multi-level Troop 322 volunteered their time at the exciting event in early August—and had a blast!
“The Standish Spectacular is a community celebration where families come together in support of different parts of the Parks and Rec’s department. This year was towards raising money for the Parks and Rec’s Scholarship fund,” says Troop 322 Leader Kaitlyn Williams.
Throughout the carnival, the Girl Scouts helped younger attendees by hosting games, making crafts, and trying their hands at face painting.
“My favorite part was a helping a toddler at the bean bag toss. I loved cheering him on and seeing happy he was to be there. Another favorite was getting to play on the bounce slide and watch the fireworks,” says Girl Scout Emma.
After a long yet fun day of kite flying, wall climbing, obstacle courses, and endless yard games, the troop finished off the Standish Spectacular with some incredible evening fireworks.
“My biggest takeaway was seeing the Girl Scouts engage in their community and showing that we do more than just sell cookies. I enjoyed seeing the girls light up when they were given ‘jobs’ and watching them respect the authority of the leaders, taking on anything they were asked of with courage, helpfulness, and consideration,” says Kaitlyn.
