ALFRED—Troop 1116 collaborated with Little Threads Sewing Studio in Alfred to learn how to sew pieces of their own from beginning to end. Led by Little Threads founder and owner, Melanie Frechette, seven girls from the troop created matching fleece hats and messenger bags throughout the two-hour program.
“Miss Melanie at the studio showed them how to use a sewing machine, talked about the machine’s parts, how it operates safely, and then the girls were off and running creating their projects,” said Troop Leader Karen Barnes.
Karen brought her older Cadettes to Little Threads a few years ago for a similar activity, but says for her Brownies, this was a great introduction.
“It was so wonderful to see how proud the girls were of themselves for being able to use a sewing machine completely on their own. They were so excited to learn a new skill and do it independently.” Said Karen.
The girls had such a good time crafting their pieces, they each wanted to continue practicing their new hobby at home after the program was over!
“Eight year olds are way more capable than adults may think. My girls walked away from this activity with an abundance of confidence and shine—it made my heart so happy!” Said Karen.
