AUBURN—Five Girl Scouts from A Place for Girls Troops 4055 and 4127 attended a jewelry badge training program at Day’s Jewelers in Auburn last month to work towards earning their Junior Jeweler badge. The girls spent the exciting afternoon touring the sales floor, learning how to clean jewelry, participating in a scavenger hunt, and even got to use real tools to make their very own necklaces.
“My favorite part was getting to see the employees clean the rings because I never knew machines like that even existed. I also loved seeing all of the different gemstones and learning about which month they represented,” said Maryan, a Girl Scout who attended the program.
The Girl Scouts of Maine (GSME) has partnered with Day’s Jewelers since 2017 to offer the badge training program across all store locations in the state. Through the training, girls get the opportunity to learn about the processes within the jewelry industry while gaining valuable insight into the operational side of a successful New England based, employee-owned business.
"Community engagement is a major focal point of our company culture at Day's Jewelers. For me personally, I really value creating meaningful jewelry experiences for the next generation. Sasha and I enjoyed the time we spent with the girls so much. I can't say enough about how their enthusiasm, engagement, questions, and curiosity meant to us,” said Vanessa Phipps, store manager of Day’s Jewelers in Auburn.
"Back when I was a Junior Girl Scout, I wish I had the experience to learn about the jewelry industry as a potential career field, I might have started on my professional journey a lot sooner than I did. I want the girls to see themselves joining the Day's Team in the future,” said Phipps.
Troop Leader Morgan Reilly says for most girls that participated, the Day’s training was their first Girl Scout field trip within the community.
“One of my biggest takeaways from the program as a leader was getting to watch the girls interact with professionals in the community and apply the social skills we have been working on. The Day’s Jewelers staff welcomed the girls’ energy and joy, and made the troop feel right at home in the store,” said Reilly.
