Eight Girl Scouts from Troop 277 completed their Bronze Award projects this June aimed at taking an inclusive approach to cooking.
“Our group looked at the issue of inclusivity within our Girl Scout community. Because there are a lot of dietary restrictions in our troop, it can make it especially difficult for everybody to be included in the snacks, particularly within a multi-troop event,” says Troop 277 Co-Leaders Sonja Williams and Donna Bucci.
Knowing that they wanted each and every Girl Scout to feel included in the fun of cooking and eating together, the troop decided to write up a specialized cookbook to be shared with their service unit.
The book incorporates recipes that accommodate and celebrate all different diet types through delicious treats. Divided into six sections: Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks, Dinner, Desserts, and Fun to Try—the book has something sure to please everyone’s taste buds!
“We think that all girls will be able to be included when they go to Girl Scout events and feel like they are part of the group. We also think people will learn from reading the book and get some great ideas for events and badges,” say Sonja and Donna.
For the Journey piece of their Bronze Award project, the girls painted rocks with colorful, kind messages of encouragement that related to inner beauty and girl power. They hid the rocks around downtown Saco and posted photos on social media of their creations to motivate local folks to go out looking for them, and ultimately re-hide them again.
Thanks for giving us a taste of inclusivity, Troop 277!
