Girl Scouts, Ariel, Braylee, and Kariana from Troop 1365 in Calais completed their Bronze Award project in June! They focused their project on a community-based learning experience involving a couple of local schools and a lesson on the stars.
Since the girls loved learning about all things stars and the galaxy themselves in class, they decided to create constellation teaching kits to give to teachers! The kits included hands-on unit packets to keep kids engaged and teachers excited about the fun topic.
Their idea helped teachers and young students in their area learn about the sky and beyond, all while having interactive fun at the same time.
“All the teachers we gave kits to were very excited and told us they were well done. One teacher even switched schools and took her kit with her and said it was going to be her first unit this fall,” says Troop 1365 Troop Leader Cheryl Ingersoll.
But it wasn’t only the constellation packets that Troop 1365 put together, they also worked on a rewarding Take Action project along the way!
Nothing brightens your day like a kind message from a stranger, but what if you found that message on a seashell?
To fulfill their Take Action project portion of the journey, Ariel and Braylee decorated shells with encouraging phrases, words, and quotes before hiding them around town for passersby to find! They also made a video explaining their process and aim and posted it to Facebook so that members of their community would know to be on the lookout.
One Girl Scout from the troop, Kariana, took a slightly different approach to the journey: with stickers! She transformed herself into the “Kindness Fairy.” Within her new role, Kariana kept a pouch full of stickers and kind notes to pass along to folks to follow in suit.
“We learned that it’s fun to help the community and we like to help people. Being kind feels great,” says Cheryl.
