Silver Award Girl Scouts, Arianna and Katherine

Arianna and Katherine

Trails for Veterans

Arianna and Katherine live in a community with a significant population of veterans. Their troop have worked with the veteran’s organization, House in the Woods, and the girl’s interest in veteran affairs and issues have increased as they’ve progressed through Girl Scouts. For their Silver Award project, the girls decided to investigate issues that veteran’s face upon returning home from deployment. Through talking to psychologists and mental health experts, the girls discovered that mental health and wellbeing is a significant issue for many veterans. They also learned that time spent outside can aide in reducing anxiety and depression, as well as improve mood and self-esteem. The girls decided to team up with House in the Woods to revitalize a trail system and to spread awareness about veteran issues. The goal for Arianna and Katherine’s project was to make it easier for veterans to socialize in a calming and peaceful environment by providing House in the Woods with a resource that would assist veterans who were returning home from deployment. The girls led a group of local volunteers in cleaning up the trail system, as well as installing directional and educational signs throughout the trail system. Arianna says she lived the Girl Scout law in her project by, “Making the world a better place, or a portion of it by bringing peace to the people who would go on the trails.”
