Silver Award Girl Scout, Alexyss

Alexyss Baird

Flag Boxes

Alexyss discovered that there were a lot of people in her community that only know the basics of flag etiquette. Oftentimes people know about how to properly raise and retire the American flag, but they do not know how to properly dispose of worn-out flags. Knowing that properly disposing of old American flags is part of honoring the American flag, Alexyss worked with her local American Legion, Community Center, and the staff at her town office to construct and place flag retirement boxes around her community. The American Legion agreed to continue Alexyss’ project by monitoring the boxes and collecting the old flags as necessary to sustain her project. They also agreed to host a flag burning ceremony every Flag Day. Alexyss said she learned that, “What seemed like a simple project was more complex and required time management to finish.”
