Little Bee Library

Lilli’s project was inspired by the closing of her local elementary school. When the school closed, it also meant that the library associated with the school had closed and that students did not have easy access to books unless their parents would drive them 45 minutes to the closest library. Lilli decided to focus on turning a negative situation in her community into a positive by designing, constructing, placing, and coordinating book donations for what she named “Little Bee’s Library”. Lilli worked with town officials and community members to obtain approval of and coordinate the placement of the little library. She worked with local businesses, which assisted with the design, construction, and installation of her library. Lilli also worked with the local school system, which assisted with publicizing her library to students. To let others know about her library, Lilli registered her library on the Little Free Library website so that people all over the world will know about it. Lilli said that through her project she was able to learn public speaking skills, which she knows will help her in the future, and that she enjoyed learning how to use power tools, which will help her be more independent when working on future projects. Lilli lived the Girl Scout Promise and Law through her project by respecting authority. “I learned that you must ask permission and work with the town to accomplish many things. I used resources wisely. The businesses had many items that were discarded from other projects so we could reuse them, creating less waste.”
