Silver Award Girl Scout, Franchesca

Children’s Summer Reading Program

Franchesca likes reading and helping others. For her Silver Award project, she learned about the “summer slide”, which is a decline in reading ability and other academic skills that can occur over the summer months when school isn't in session. Franchesca worked with a high school English teacher as her project advisor to learn more about reading programs and resources in her community, as well as learning styles. She discovered that it would be beneficial to create a summer reading program for children in preschool through third grade to address the summer slide issue. One goal for Franchesca’s project was assisting children with reading during the summer in an educational yet fun way. She worked with her Project Advisor and local Rec Director to design and plan a 6-week summer reading program for area youth. Due to the pandemic, Franchesca wasn’t able to host her reading program in-person however, she was quickly able to turn her program into an online series. She created an introduction video to her program and created a Facebook page for participants and their parents to share book recommendations and their activity progress. Franchesca says that “Because of the pandemic, I didn't quite get the turnout I wanted. I feel if we were in person I would have gotten more kids to join. I do feel that the kids who participated would see a difference in their reading/learning abilities this school year.” She also said that “I discovered how I never gave up no matter how hard it got during these rough times.”
