After talking to local pet experts, including a local animal control officer, Katie discovered that many pet owners lack the resources necessary to adequately feed their pets and themselves. Upon further investigation, Katie learned of another issue perpetuating the problem: that pet owners can be embarrassed to admit that they need help caring for their pets, sometimes even prioritizing animal food before their own.
To address the issue, Katie teamed up with a local library, the animal control officer, her father, and a family friend to build and stock the Little Free Pet Food Pantry. To receive donations, Katie created flyers and advertisements for a pet supply drive, asking folks for supplies such as pet food, collars, leashes, dishes, blankets and more.
Katie’s project will continue to flourish under the direction of the animal control officer who interacts with many pet owners and community members throughout her area to ensure the pantry always stays full. To spread awareness, Katie created a Facebook page, Instagram account, and even a website to explain her mission. What’s the biggest skill Katie says she learned from the project? How to write a business letter, which will certainly come in handy with college applications!
