Passion to Action
Girl Scouts of Maine hosts first Passion to Action event!
On June 15, 2018, Girl Scouts of Maine hosted the first ever Passion to Action event on the University of Southern Maine campus. A civic engagement event, our goal at this extraordinary form was to inspire us all to take a passionate stand for positive change, and then take that passion and mobilize it into action.
And inspired we were!
We had three wonderful speakers that day - Meredith Strang Burgess, President and Chief Executive Officer of Burgess Advertising, Emily Cain, Executive Director of EMILY’S List, and U.S. Senator Angus King.
Each of our engaging speakers shared their inspiring stories of how, despite the different paths they took, they were lead to a life of public service: from Meredith’s journey leading to the creation of Maine’s Tri for a Cure and the Maine Breast Cancer license plate; to Emily’s dynamic speech about reluctantly entering the political sphere; and Senator King’s school-age experience with civil rights and hearing Martin Luther King’s famous, “I Have a Dream” speech while sitting in a tree on the Washington Mall.
As each speaker told their stories, you could hear a pin drop in the audience. They were mesmerizing!
And for the first time ever, Girl Scouts of Maine awarded $10,000 in the Future Leaders Scholarship awards to six very deserving high school senior Girl Scouts as they head to college. Applicants had to submit a thoughtful and well-presented five-minute video, answering three questions:
- How has Girl Scouts made a difference in your life?
- What do you see as the biggest challenge facing girls and women today?
- In 5 years, how do you see yourself addressing that challenge?
The 2018 Girl Scouts of Maine Future Leaders Scholarship awardees
are Gabrielle Begos of Westbrook, Jessica Brown of Portland, Sierra
Cummins of Monmouth, Emma Galipeau-Eldridge of Otisfield, Bailee
Kinney of Poland, and Mairead Murphy of York.
Thank you to all the Girl Scout applicants – and all our Girl Scout members – who strive to make the world a better place. Thank you for demonstrating that Girl Scouts is a place where a girl’s choice is not ignored, her voice is heard and her leadership skills will carry her into her adult life. You are all amazing girls! Thank you!
