While stationed in Afghanistan, Whitten’s unit received nearly 3,000 boxes of Girl Scout Cookies that were sent by several Maine Girl Scout Troops.
“It’s great to feel support from home while serving overseas,” said Whitten. “Boxes came in and we took them around and it was neat to see them because everyone had a smile of their face as they picked their favorite cookie… it really did brighten their day.”
Whitten presented the statewide Girl Scouts of Maine Council with a mosaic of the American Flag, and an actual flag that flew over their unit’s compound.
“Many of our girls have family members stationed in Afghanistan,” said McDonald. “So sharing cookies is a small but wonderful way that we can touch lives back and forth. We are honored to be acknowledged by the Maine Army National Guard.”
The award ceremony took place at an event sponsored by Girl Scouts of Maine on Sunday, June 13 in celebration of their service center and shop’s recent move from Brewer to Bangor. Several hundred girls came out to visit the new spot at 359 Perry Road. Girl Scouts of Maine also has a service center and shop in South Portland.
